He was in a series of books called The Jewelled Men, by Patricia Veryan (One of my <em> favourite </em> authors, even though they say she's a romance writer, she has some pretty awesome adventure novels) and his name was August Falcon. He was quite cynical, and a half-breed which apparently gave him the right to duel with every man he didn't like. But anyway, though he acts like he has no friends or no wish to help (and the fact that he's always being outspoken, rude, and completely untactful is usually very funny) he usually does. He slowly turned in time to see an average built young man stare in horror to the right of him. He glanced to his right and saw the young woman looking down at her side in disbelief, she had obvious whipped around and stood back to back with Malachi when she heard the voice. Her brown hair flopped in-front of her face and her green shirt began darkening until a section of it was a deep red. Malachi quickly leapt to her side steadied her, but ended up scooping her into his arms. “Show me were a physician is. Now!” Malachi’s harsh voice broke the people out of their stupor.<br /> A timid looking man broke from the crowd and pointed to one of the small wooden buildings. Malachi himself hadn’t completely accepted this turn of events. He could almost her Vance’s sardonic voice ringing in his ears saying, “You let a helpless girl take a bullet for you. Coward.”<br /> Malachi shook his head and broke into a run, careful not to jolt the girl around too much. He heard an uproar begin behind him and the crowd began following. He barged though the doors at the small doctor’s residence. “Help! Please help, a- a woman has been shot!” the voice seemed distant to Malachi, distant and... terrified.<br /> ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~<br /> Malachi paced the a small room, he couldn’t remember when he’d last felt this much emotion. <em> Perfect. Trouble seems to be quite attached to me. </em> He growled. The doctor entered the room then, his hands bloodied and his face drawn. He went to a basin in a corner of the room and tried to some success to scrub his hands. Still facing the wall, he said, “The bullet grazed rib, she should recover. In time. Who-“ He left the last part unsaid and a odd tension hung in the air.<br /> Malachi bowed his head slightly. “I don’t know. The bullet was meant for me.” Malachi then realized the doctor seemed to be only in his twenties. Maybe twenty-five.<br /> The doctor stared at Malachi a moment, then shrugged. “She kept mumbling about a dark-hair, dark-eyed saviour.”<br /> Malachi dropped his eyes again. “She must have a brother or something.”<br /> The doctor shook his head. “Her name is Rebecca White. She had no brothers. Her father died when she was but a child.”<br /> Malachi unconsciously closed his eyes and a little red-head boy’s image popped into his mind. His thin face dusted with orange freckles and dark eyes shining from beneath hair that hung in his eyes. The blue jean overalls were grass stained and slightly too big and a note sticking out of his front pocket. He gently took it from his overalls and extended it out with both hands, a merry smile lighting up his face. But the smile died from his eyes, his face became twisted in a scared expression and he turned and ran. Ran fast, fast way from a solitary figure standing with his arms outstretched, but in his hands soon materialized two revolvers guns and between smiling mouth a dagger.<br /> Malachi was snapped back to reality when hands began shaking him. “-answer me! Sir!”<br /> He staggered backwards and when his eyes opened he saw a somewhat concerned face peering at him. “Er- I’m sorry. Do you have some where I can stay?”<br /> The kind face smiled. “Why you can stay right ‘ere.”<br /> “I couldn’t possibly-“ Malachi began.<br /> “Nonsense, I have no family, no wife, I live alone.
